Manchester United Set to Cut Jobs in Major Restructuring Effort

Manchester United is making bold moves to reshape its workforce, with plans to reduce staff by 150 to 200 positions as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the club’s financial future.

This latest round of layoffs follows an earlier restructuring phase that saw around 250 roles cut under the leadership of co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Speaking to employees, Chief Executive Omar Berrada explained that these measures are necessary to streamline operations and improve long-term sustainability.

With the club employing 1,140 staff members as of June 30, 2024, the expected total reduction of 450 positions would amount to nearly 39% of the workforce. These changes come at a time when Manchester United faces significant financial challenges, including a reported £27.7 million loss in the second quarter and more than £300 million in losses over the past three years.

Strategic Adjustments for Future Stability

Beyond workforce reductions, Manchester United is also implementing other cost-cutting initiatives. Some staff members will be relocated from Old Trafford to the Carrington training facility, allowing the club to consolidate its operations. Additionally, the club has decided to remove free lunches at Old Trafford, a move expected to save over £1 million annually.

Despite these financial adjustments, Manchester United remains committed to supporting its community initiatives. The annual £40,000 donation to the Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association will continue, and discussions with the Manchester United Foundation about ongoing contributions are in progress.

Looking Ahead

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear that financial discipline is a top priority, paving the way for future investments in both the men’s and women’s teams, as well as critical infrastructure projects. Plans for major upgrades—including the potential renovation of Old Trafford or the construction of a new stadium—are under discussion, with significant costs expected.

Berrada reassured fans and staff that these tough decisions are made with the club’s best interests in mind. “Our goal is to ensure Manchester United is in the strongest position possible to compete at every level,” he stated.

With these strategic changes, the club aims to build a more sustainable future while maintaining its commitment to on-field success.
