A Live-Action “Barney” Film Set to Delight Adult Fans.
Exciting news for fans of the beloved purple dinosaur! A live-action “Barney” movie is in the works, and it’s specifically tailored for adults who grew up with the character.
Producer Kevin McKeon, in an interview with The New Yorker, revealed that the project, co-produced by Mattel and Daniel Kaluuya, will take a surrealistic approach. Rather than targeting children, the film will tap into millennial nostalgia and explore the trials and tribulations of being in one’s thirties, having grown up with Barney.
“Barney & Friends” first aired in April 1992, making its earliest fans now in their thirties. Known for his optimism, laughter, and educational messages, Barney and his iconic “I Love You” song left a lasting impression on many.

While details of the plot remain under wraps, McKeon described the concept as an “A24-type” film, hinting at a tone reminiscent of artful independent movies like “The Whale,” “Aftersun,” “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The aim is to create something daring that showcases the artistry behind the project.
Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films also expressed excitement about the film’s unique approach to the beloved character, promising surprises and defying expectations. The project aims to evoke nostalgia among adults while captivating today’s kids.
Earlier this year, Mattel gave fans a glimpse of the digital Barney, as the franchise prepares for its relaunch. The new animated Barney, set to debut in 2024, will take viewers on adventures centered around love, community, and encouragement.
Stay tuned for more updates on the live-action “Barney” movie as its release date draws closer. It’s a thrilling prospect for fans who hold a special place in their hearts for the cheerful dinosaur and his message of love and friendship.
