Presidential candidate and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has unveiled a plan to make smartphones more accessible to Ghanaians if elected president. Speaking at a campaign event, Dr. Bawumia shared his vision to collaborate with phone manufacturers, allowing citizens to acquire smartphones on credit and pay as little as one or two cedis per month.

“We will ensure mobile phones are affordable. My government will partner with phone manufacturers so that Ghanaians can purchase them on credit and pay 1 or 2 cedis every month,” Dr. Bawumia announced, emphasizing the importance of digital inclusion in his administration’s agenda.

He stressed that this initiative would significantly enhance access to information and communication technology, bridging the digital divide and empowering more Ghanaians to engage in the digital economy. This effort is part of a broader strategy to improve the technological landscape and drive economic growth.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that access to smartphones is essential for modern living, providing opportunities for education, business, and social connection. He pointed out that the high cost of smartphones currently prevents many Ghanaians from owning them, a barrier his government aims to remove with this innovative plan.

“Access to smartphones is no longer a luxury but a necessity. It opens up opportunities for education, business, and staying connected with loved ones. By making smartphones affordable, we are not only enhancing connectivity but also fostering an environment where every Ghanaian can thrive in the digital age,” Dr. Bawumia added.

He further explained that the plan would involve partnerships with major phone manufacturers to ensure that devices are available at low costs and on favorable payment terms. The initiative would also include measures to educate users on how to leverage smartphones for personal and professional development.

Dr. Bawumia is currently campaigning in the Savannah Region and plans to visit Bole, the hometown of his main contender, former President and current flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama. His presence in the Savannah Region consistently draws large crowds, and he enjoys strong support in Bole from a growing number of NPP enthusiasts.
