Namibia’s ruling Swapo party has assured the public that President Hage Geingob is “in good spirits and is receiving good medical attention” for his ongoing cancer treatment.
Last week, the presidency disclosed that President Geingob would undergo cancer treatment following routine medical check-ups and a subsequent biopsy that revealed the presence of cancerous cells. While specific details about his diagnosis were not provided, the presidency affirmed that the president would continue fulfilling his duties.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Swapo’s deputy leader, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, affirmed that President Geingob would persist in handling the affairs of the party and government, giving due priority to his medical treatment, as reported by state media.
Ms. Ndaitwah also urged Namibians to allow the 82-year-old leader and his family the space to focus on his recovery without engaging in speculative discussions.
Namibia is gearing up for presidential and parliamentary elections later this year. President Geingob, who has been at the helm of the southern African nation since 2015, is set to conclude his second and final term in office.
In 2014, President Geingob publicly shared his successful battle with prostate cancer.
