Aid agencies have reported the successful rescue of approximately 300 children from an orphanage in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. The children were residing at the Mygoma Orphanage, where over 70 deaths have been recorded due to hunger and illness since the onset of the conflict in mid-April.

The orphanage is situated in an area of the city heavily affected by the ongoing conflict, as stated by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Ranging in age from one month to 15 years, the 297 children have been relocated to Wad Madani, located around 200km (125 miles) away from Khartoum.

They are currently housed at a transit center, and UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, is collaborating with the relevant authorities to find foster families for them. Mandeep O’Brien, a representative from UNICEF, expressed hope in the safe relocation of these vulnerable children, which brings a glimmer of hope amidst the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
