On July 31, a barrel containing the naked body of Javonnta Murphy, brother of Jaquan Murphy, washed up onto shore. Jaquan was one of five individuals arrested in connection with the late New York City emcee’s murder. He was initially charged with attempted murder but later cleared of involvement in Pop Smoke’s killing.
Currently, Jaquan is awaiting a trial date for an unrelated killing in Los Angeles County. Law enforcement sources reveal that investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are now exploring any potential links between Javonnta’s killing and Pop Smoke’s death. While this is just a theory being explored, investigators are thoroughly investigating all possibilities.
In an earlier report by the Los Angeles Times, it was disclosed that an 18-year-old charged in the fatal shooting of Pop Smoke confessed to the crime during a juvenile court session. At the time of the robbery-turned-killing, the defendant was only 15 years old. He admitted to first-degree murder, robbery, and intentionally discharging his weapon during the home invasion.
