Niger’s military junta takes decisive action amid unresolved political stand-off.

Following unsuccessful talks with a delegation from Ecowas, the regional bloc, Niger’s military junta has cut ties with Nigeria, Togo, the US, and France. The announcement was made on state TV by Col Amadou Abdramane, a junta member representing the coup leaders. As a part of this move, Niger’s ambassadors have been recalled from the four nations mentioned.

Earlier, a delegation led by Nigeria’s former military head of state, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, engaged with some members of the military junta in attempts to find a resolution. However, the talks didn’t yield progress, and the delegation left after just a few hours.

In response to Niger’s decision to sever diplomatic ties, the Nigerian President and Ecowas head, Bola Tinubu, is yet to issue a response.

Amid the political tension, West African defense chiefs have convened in Nigeria for a three-day meeting to consider possible military interventions if diplomatic efforts do not lead to a resolution.

The situation remains tense, and the region is closely monitoring developments as diplomatic relations are affected, and potential military interventions are being considered.
