Accusations Fly as Niger’s Military Junta Points Fingers at Former Colonial Power
Tensions rise as the military junta in Niger raises concerns over France’s alleged interference in the country’s stability.
According to the junta, a French aircraft was reported to have violated Niger’s airspace, despite its closure by the junta.
Furthermore, the junta claims that French soldiers were involved in the release of captured jihadists, purportedly for the purpose of launching attacks on military installations.
As of now, there has been no official response from the French authorities.
Niger’s recently elected President, Mohamed Bazoum, was ousted from power at the close of the previous month, leading to a lingering crisis that has yet to be resolved through diplomatic means.
In a display of support, United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed that he had engaged in a conversation with Mr. Bazoum, offering reassurances of continued assistance.
The regional coalition Ecowas, which had previously hinted at the possibility of military intervention, is scheduled to convene on Thursday to deliberate on its forthcoming actions.
