In state elections marked by low turnout, Nigeria’s ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) party retained control of the country’s commercial hub, Lagos.

Lagos is Africa’s most populous city, with a population of over 20 million people.

Last month, voters in the state-supported opposition candidate Peter Obi in disputed presidential elections are being challenged in court.

The electoral commission announced that incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu retained his seat with a tally of over 760,000 votes, more than double that of his closest rival.

His opponent, citing fraud, rejected the outcome before the final count was announced. He vowed to appeal the results.

Nigerian governors oversee multimillion-dollar budgets and are in charge of schools, hospitals, and infrastructure.
