Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addressed concerns regarding hunger in conflict-affected regions like Tigray and Amhara, stating that there are no reported deaths specifically due to hunger in Ethiopia. However, he acknowledged the presence of illnesses associated with malnutrition that may have led to deaths.
While admitting the impact of drought in various regions, including Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia, the Prime Minister cautioned against politicizing the issue of hunger. Last month, the Federal Ombudsman Institute reported nearly 400 deaths from hunger in Tigray and Amhara over the past six months.
The Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRC) criticized both federal and regional governments for insufficient humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable populations. Approximately 20 million Ethiopians require food assistance due to conflicts, drought, and flooding, according to the UN. As the situation unfolds, addressing the humanitarian crisis remains a critical priority.
