Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan have shared heartfelt tributes following the passing of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, who died at age 82 in a London hospital on Sunday.
Speaking from Abeokuta, Obasanjo described the news as deeply saddening. Reflecting on their shared history, he called Buhari a colleague, a comrade, and a patriotic Nigerian who served the country with dedication.
“With a heavy heart, I received the news of the passing of General Muhammadu Buhari,” Obasanjo said. “As a soldier, he did his duty. As an administrator and later as a statesman, he stayed committed to the service of our nation. His experience and leadership will be greatly missed.”
Former President Jonathan also paid tribute, describing Buhari as a steadfast leader and public servant who approached governance with integrity and discipline.
“It is with profound sorrow that I acknowledge the loss of former President Buhari,” Jonathan stated. “He was admired for his simplicity, courage, and unwavering devotion to the nation. As both military head of state and civilian president, he served Nigeria to the best of his ability.”
Jonathan highlighted Buhari’s lasting impact and the respect he earned across various sectors of society. “He leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered by all who value commitment, sacrifice, and integrity,” he said.
Both former leaders extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians mourning across the country. They prayed for his peaceful repose and comfort for those left behind.
