Oscar Pistorius Appeals for Parole Eligibility in South Africa.
South African athlete Oscar Pistorius, who served six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has approached the Constitutional Court to seek parole eligibility.
This move follows his denied parole request in March due to not fulfilling the required minimum sentence for early release.
In 2017, Pistorius received a 13-year prison term after being found guilty of murder, following a lengthy trial and multiple appeals.
His conviction stems from fatally shooting Steenkamp behind his secure home’s bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013, asserting he mistook her for an intruder. Pistorius contends that being held longer in prison infringes upon his fundamental rights and believes he qualifies for parole.
However, the nation’s highest appellate court clarified earlier this year that the six-time Paralympic gold medalist must spend an additional year and a half in jail before parole consideration.
The complexity arises from Pistorius’ prison time being fragmented by appeals and periods of house arrest.
