Students in Gaziantep, Adana, and Osmaniye return to classrooms after a pause due to Feb. 6 earthquakes

Over 1.3 million students returned to school on Monday in Turkey’s earthquake-ravaged provinces of Gaziantep, Adana, and Osmaniye.

As many as 662,500 students in Gaziantep, 497,850 in Adana, and 137,760 in Osmaniye returned to school after renovation and repair work was completed on their school buildings, which were damaged in the Feb. 6 earthquakes that ripped through southern Turkey, killing nearly 48,000 people.

After a moment of silence and singing the Turkish national anthem, students entered the classrooms.

After receiving approval from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, school education resumed.

Meanwhile, preparations for the return of classes on March 27 in Adiyaman, Malatya, Kahramanmaras, and Hatay provinces continue.

The powerful earthquakes that shook 11 Turkish provinces – Kahramanmaras, Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, Elazig, and Sanliurfa – affected more than 13 million people. Many schools and dormitories have also opened their doors to earthquake survivors.
