According to a UN assessment, the M23 rebel group was responsible for at least 131 deaths at the end of November in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Investigations, according to the report, have established that there were fatalities among civilians in two villages, Kishishe and Bambo, in the Rutsuhuru district of North Kivu province. According to the UN, the victims were killed in what seemed to be retaliation for the current government offensive.
In retaliation for the battles between the M23 and other groups, it claims that “this brutality was carried out as part of a campaign of murders, rapes, kidnappings, and looting against two villages in the Rutshuru region.”
The M23 rebels, who this year took control of a number of towns close to the borders of Rwanda and Uganda, have denied harming civilians.
