According to the Red Cross in Senegal, nearly 360 people were injured in the violence that erupted on Thursday after opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was sentenced to two years in prison.

At least 16 people have been killed in clashes between demonstrators and security forces in Dakar, the capital, and Mr. Sonko’s hometown of Zinguinchor.

Mr. Sonko’s supporters argue that his conviction on charges of “corrupting” a young woman was politically motivated.

They have condemned the “murderous repression” of the security forces.

The situation appeared to be calm on Sunday.

The government has restricted mobile internet access in order to prevent “subversive messages” from being shared.
