The final rites for the former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, have begun at St. Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, Ondo State.

Akeredolu, who passed away on December 27, 2023, at the age of 67 after a prolonged illness, is being laid to rest in a series of ceremonies that commenced on Monday, February 19th, 2024, and have continued throughout the week.

Today, Friday, marks the apex of the proceedings, with the primary funeral service currently underway at St. Andrews Church in Owo.

In a recent tribute, the current Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, lauded his predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu, for his bold and impactful contributions to governance and the welfare of the people.

During a special court session held in honor of the late governor at the state High Court headquarters in Akure, Aiyedatiwa reflected on Akeredolu’s legacy, particularly his significant judicial reforms.

Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted Akeredolu’s unwavering commitment to combating criminal activities and injustice during his tenure, culminating in the establishment of the state security network agency, popularly known as Amotekun.

He remarked, “We fondly recall his (Akeredolu) dedication to ensuring access to justice, his advocacy for the Multidoor Court System, and enhancements to the Alternate Dispute Resolution system, along with improved welfare for judges and judicial officers.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa further emphasized Akeredolu’s proactive approach to lawmaking, citing his sponsorship of the Executive Bill for establishing the Ondo State Security Agency and Amotekun Corps to uphold law and order. Additionally, Akeredolu’s administration spearheaded the bill for establishing the Ondo State Security Trust Fund.

The commemoration served as a testament to Akeredolu’s enduring contributions to the advancement of Ondo State, leaving a lasting imprint on its judicial system and security architecture.
