Pope Francis, currently receiving treatment for pneumonia, spent a restful night and remains under close medical care, the Vatican confirmed on Tuesday.

The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 after developing bronchitis, which later progressed into pneumonia, raising concerns worldwide.

On Monday, he experienced two episodes of acute respiratory distress due to a buildup of mucus in his airways, leading to difficulty breathing, the Vatican shared in an update. Medical experts continue to monitor his condition, as respiratory complications can be serious, affecting oxygen flow in the body.

Despite his hospitalization, Pope Francis has been keeping up with his duties from his special suite on the hospital’s 10th floor. Though unable to lead the traditional Angelus prayer for a third consecutive Sunday, he expressed his gratitude through a written message, saying:

“I feel all your affection and closeness, and at this moment, I truly feel carried and supported by all of God’s people. Thank you all.”

The Vatican remains hopeful for his recovery, as well-wishes and prayers continue to pour in from around the world.
