A human rights group known as the “Take It Back Movement” took to the streets of Lagos State on Monday to protest against the skyrocketing price of food and the overall high cost of living in the country.

The protest came despite warnings issued by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, on Sunday.

Protesters were observed carrying placards with various messages at Ojuelegba under the bridge area of the state, voicing their grievances regarding the current economic challenges across the nation.

Juwon Sanyaolu, the TIB National Coordinator, stated that the protest aimed to express the people’s resistance against oppressive conditions and economic hardship.

“Despite police attempts to deter the people, Lagosians stood firm. The police are funded by taxpayers’ money to ensure our safety,” Sanyaolu remarked.

“We successfully marched from Yaba Labour House to Maryland. The protest will continue tomorrow with updates provided. We will join NLC in their nationwide mass action to end the suffering caused by the ruling elite,” Sanyaolu continued.

Regarding their demands, Sanyaolu emphasized, “The Tinubu-led government must promptly reverse the fuel subsidy removal, the floating of naira, and other policies imposed on Nigerians by the International Monetary Fund.”

The protest also saw the participation of members from other civil society organizations such as the Joint Action Front and the Coalition for Revolution. Police officers and officers from the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps were observed following the protesters.
