Karim Benzema, the French star for the Spanish club, scored the opening goal in the 22nd minute at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio scored with a curler from outside the box in the 74th minute to put his team up 2-0.
For at least 30 minutes, the Blues played with 10 men.
Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell was shown a straight red card in the 59th minute for a professional foul on Rodrygo.

Chilwell will be absent for the second leg in London.
