Senegalese lawmakers convened on Monday to discuss a proposal aimed at postponing the presidential election, originally scheduled for February 25, as reported by an AFP journalist.

President Macky Sall’s announcement of the delay on Saturday, just hours before the commencement of campaigning, ignited a political crisis.

The parliament is currently reviewing a proposal put forth by supporters of Karim Wade, who was denied candidacy by the Constitutional Council. The proposal suggests postponing the election for a period ranging from six months to a year, potentially until February 2025, according to documents circulated during the meeting.

The proponents argue that delaying the election would prevent institutional instability and political unrest, ensuring a smooth resumption of the electoral process. Notably, President Sall’s parliamentary allies support the proposal.

Members of the preparatory committee cited various factors influencing their recommendation for postponement until February 2025, including challenges posed by campaigning during the rainy season and potential conflicts with significant religious holidays.
