Six members of the Labour Party (LP) in the Enugu State House of Assembly have formally switched allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Their defection was announced on Thursday in Enugu, with a letter read by the Speaker, Chief Uche Ugwu, during the plenary session at the Assembly Legislative Complex.

The defectors include Ejike Eze (Igbo-Eze North 1), Johnson Ugwu (Enugu North), Princess Ugwu (Enugu South Rural), Pius Ezeugwu (Nsukka West), Amuka Williams (Igbo-Etiti East), and Osita Eze (Oji River).

In their statement, the defectors cited the “irreconcilable division” and ongoing crisis within the Labour Party at the national and state levels as the reason for their move.

They lamented the party’s descent into perpetual discord, with various factions engaged in legal battles, which they believe has undermined its ability to effectively serve the interests of the people.

Once viewed as a beacon of hope for progressive ideas, the Labour Party, according to the defectors, has unfortunately become synonymous with internal strife, diminishing its capacity to fulfill the aspirations of the electorate.

Expressing optimism about their decision, the defectors believe that joining the PDP will provide them with a platform to diligently serve their constituents.
