Thirteen men were executed in Puntland, Somalia’s semi-autonomous region.

Nine of them were charged with being members of the militant Islamist groups al-Shabab and the Islamic State.

Six former soldiers were convicted of murder.

In the northern cities of Garowe, Bosasso, and Galkayo, they were executed by firing squad.

According to human rights organizations, executions are on the rise in Somalia.

The vast majority of those executed are suspected Islamist militants, rapists, and members of the security forces.
