Somalia Implements Ban on Tiktok, Telegram, and 1XBet Amid Security Concerns.
Somalia has taken a decisive step by announcing a prohibition on social media platforms Tiktok and Telegram, along with the online betting platform 1XBet. This decision is motivated by concerns about the use of these platforms by “terrorists and groups responsible for spreading immorality.” The government believes that these platforms are being exploited to disseminate graphic content and misinformation, leading to the misleading of society.
This move coincides with Somalia’s determined effort to combat the al-Shabab militant group’s influence. The group currently holds significant control over parts of the country, and the government aims to dismantle their operations within the next five months.
The government’s directive has been extended to internet service providers, who are required to enforce the ban by August 24. Failure to comply could result in unspecified legal consequences, as stated by the Ministry of Communications and Technology.
A recent conference held in the capital city, Mogadishu, underscored the detrimental impact of online platforms on the younger generation. The conference addressed the disturbing trend of these platforms contributing to the loss of lives among young people. This situation has prompted the government to take stringent measures to safeguard its citizens from the negative consequences of online activities.
