Soulja Boy is without a doubt one of the most prolific and influential artists in the game. He had the industry in a chokehold in the late 2000s and early 2010s with his deep bag of hits that dominated the radio airwaves and music video networks. The ladies adored him, and the guys aspired to be like him, which contributed to the success of his numerous hit records. Aside from “Crank Dat,” “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” is one of his most popular songs.

Yesterday (May 24), the Grammy-nominated rapper revealed how much he earned from the 2008 album on a monthly basis.

While telling HipHopDX that he didn’t necessarily get paid “that much” from the record, he revealed that the majority of his earnings came from the genius marketing behind the song. Fans would call the number 678-999-8212 nonstop, which Sammie sang near the end of Soulja’s verses before the infectious hook.

“All right, let me tell you the true story. Boom. So that number was similar to a fan line. So every time someone called that number, I got paid off of that s**t,” he explained. “It was similar to a subscription. You could text or call it, so I was probably making $100,000 per month just from people calling that number.”

“Kiss Me Thru The Phone” was produced by Jim Jonsin and Mr. Collipark and appeared on Soulja Boy’s sophomore album, iSouljaBoyTellem. He also revealed that he had intended for Chris Brown to sing the hook. Sammie, on the other hand, understood the assignment and carried it out precisely.

Big Soulja’s contributions to the industry were ahead of their time when it came to genius marketing. Check out what he had to say in the video below.
