South Africa has deployed military personnel to hospitals as a public health crisis worsens following a strike by doctors and other public sector workers for better pay.

Since last Monday, public employees have been protesting for a 10% wage increase. The government has proposed a 4.7% interest rate.
Their union has threatened to escalate the strike until its demands are met.
According to a local TV report quoting a health official in Gauteng province, troops have been deployed to Thelle Mogoerane, Sebokeng, and Bheki Mlangeni, the regions hardest hit by the strike.
Because access to some facilities remained restricted, emergency teams are believed to have been unable to respond to some emergency calls.
According to Health Minister Joe Phaahla, the strike has resulted in the loss of life.
