South Africa’s anti-corruption watchdog says there is no evidence of wrongdoing by President Cyril Ramaphosa in connection with the theft of at least $580,000 (£482,000) in cash from his farm.

The public protector, Kholeka Gcaleka, concludes in a preliminary report that Mr. Ramaphosa did not violate an ethics code or abuse his position as head of state.

According to the report, the president declared the theft within weeks of its occurrence three years ago.

However, it claims that Maj Gen Wally Rhoode, the head of the presidential protection service, acted improperly by conducting an unofficial investigation into the crime.

Late last year, an independent panel appointed by South Africa’s parliament determined that Mr. Ramaphosa had a case to answer, prompting calls for his resignation.
