Malawian authorities have closed schools in ten southern districts due to safety concerns following Cyclone Freddy’s devastation in neighboring Mozambique.

Heavy rains have washed out roads and disrupted power generation in southern Malawi, with more rain expected in the coming days.

Physical education classes have been suspended in all district learning institutions on Monday and Tuesday.

The education ministry said in a statement that teachers and students have been encouraged to use available online platforms and radio lessons.

“When physical classes resume, teachers are encouraged to provide remedial lessons to make up for a lost time,” the report continued.

Mozambique has received more than a year’s worth of rain in the last four weeks, as Cyclone Freddy made landfall for the second time in a month on Sunday.

Since the storm made landfall, at least 28 people have died in Mozambique.
