The 2022 FIFA World Cup is now taking place in Qatar, but England forward Raheem Sterling is reportedly departing because armed burglars broke into his home in the UK while his family was there.

Sterling missed England’s 3-0 victory against Senegal in the round of 16 despite having started two of the Three Lions’ three World Cup games.

Shortly before kickoff, he was reportedly removed from the squad due to a “family situation,” according to Sky Sports.

As soon as he was informed of the break-in, Sterling reportedly wanted to return home because he was distraught and worried about his kids’ safety.

Sterling’s return to the UK has been confirmed by manager Gareth Southgate, but if the conditions are right, it’s believed the player might also go back to Qatar.

Southgate replied, “I honestly don’t know; it’s a matter he needs time to deal with, and I don’t want to put any pressure on him. When asked if Sterling could return to participate in the tournament, he stated.

“Family should always come first, sometimes football isn’t the most essential thing.”

On Saturday, England will play France in the quarterfinals.
