Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for unity and focus as the party moves forward after its defeat in the 2024 elections. In the wake of the loss, which has sparked heated discussions among senior party members, Bawumia urged his supporters to avoid blame and instead work together to ensure success in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at his residence, Bawumia emphasized the importance of staying calm and unified during this challenging time. He reminded party members that while the loss is painful, blaming one another would only hinder the party’s progress. “We all need to exercise restraint because we are in pain. I have an abiding belief in God, so I won’t question His ways,” he said. “Let’s come together because we know it is our fault that we gave them the power.”
The Vice President stressed that the party’s immediate focus should be on rebuilding and preparing for the future. “Once we are united with a goal, we are going to win in 2028,” Bawumia continued. “What we need is unity—stop the blame games and let’s look at the future. Let’s leave God’s ways to Him and come together. At this stage, we need to focus on rebuilding the party and not on individual ambitions.”
Dr. Bawumia, who ran as the NPP’s presidential candidate in the 2024 elections, has officially accepted the result and congratulated John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on his victory. In a media address on December 8, Bawumia acknowledged that the provisional results, as compiled by his party, reflected Mahama’s decisive win. He also noted that contesting the results would not be productive.
On December 9, Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, confirmed that with results from 267 of the 276 constituencies across Ghana, Mahama had secured 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) while Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%), a difference of 1,671,093 votes.
