Sam Okudzeto, a seasoned legal expert and Member of the Council of State, has criticized the advocates of the anti-LGBTQI Bill recently approved by Parliament.
According to Okudzeto, the focus on homosexuality within the legislative agenda is disproportionate given the current state of the country.
He believes that such legislation should not have been prioritized, as there seems to be no compelling reason for the state to interfere in the private lives of consenting adults.
Directing his remarks towards the clergy, Okudzeto questioned their singular emphasis on homosexuality as a sinful act necessitating legal action. He challenged whether the clergy demonstrate the same fervor in addressing other transgressions outlined in the Bible.
Okudzeto stressed the existence of more urgent national issues that demand attention and resources. He urged a reassessment of national priorities, suggesting that the emphasis on anti-LGBTQ+ legislation distracts from addressing critical socio-economic challenges affecting all Ghanaians.
“We’ve seen churches clamoring for the president’s endorsement of the bill. But what about other sins outlined in the Bible? Why this fixation on LGBTQI? Corruption pervades our society, yet we’re fixated on matters of personal intimacy,” Okudzeto remarked.
He argued that the actions of adults in their private spaces should not be subject to governmental oversight or regulation. Okudzeto underscored the significance of individual liberties and privacy rights, advocating for a broader perspective on societal issues.
