The Gambia’s only female mayor has been re-elected in elections in which President Adama Barrow’s ruling party fared poorly.
Rohey Malick Lowe, a member of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), defeated Mr. Barrow’s chosen candidate Eboy Faye in Saturday’s mayoral election in Banjul.
In Kanifing, the most populous municipality that includes Serekunda, the UDP also won the mayoral election.
The UDP won the most populous regions in regional elections, West Coast and Lower River, while the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) won four other regions.
Overall, the results were a setback for Mr. Barrow, as the major cities and regions are now in opposition hands. He did, however, congratulate the winners and promised to focus on development and the consolidation of peace and stability in The Gambia.
