The World Food Programme (WFP), part of the United Nations (UN), has made the decision to temporarily halt certain food assistance in Ethiopia due to concerns regarding the potential misappropriation of donations meant for those in need. However, the WFP will continue its support for the most vulnerable individuals, including children and new mothers. The organization appreciates the Ethiopian government’s commitment to conducting an investigation into the matter.

The United States, which is the largest donor to Ethiopia, also suspended aid recently after discovering evidence of a campaign to divert assistance. The specific individuals or groups responsible for this diversion were not disclosed in the statement.

Donors have received reports suggesting that Ethiopian government entities may have orchestrated the diversion, with military units allegedly benefiting from it. The ongoing drought and the recent conflict in the Tigray region have exacerbated the food insecurity situation, with over 20 million people in Ethiopia requiring food aid.

The WFP’s decision and the suspension of aid by the United States reflect the need to address concerns related to the proper distribution of assistance and ensure that it reaches those who are most in need during this challenging time.
