Former Ghanaian President Akufo-Addo Urges African Leaders to Prioritize Self-Sufficiency

Former President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, has called on African leaders to move away from dependence on foreign aid and take charge of the continent’s development.

Speaking at the launch of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s autobiography, A Journey of Service, in Abuja, Akufo-Addo emphasized the need for unity in tackling Africa’s challenges.

He stressed that African nations must work together to address pressing issues such as healthcare crises and infrastructure deficits.

Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic

Reflecting on the impact of the global health crisis, Akufo-Addo pointed out key lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There were grim projections about Africa, with warnings that our streets would be filled with casualties. However, one harsh reality became clear—international relations are not driven by charity. Nations prioritize their own needs before extending help to others,” he stated.

He urged African countries to collaborate in producing their own medical supplies, citing efforts by nations such as Senegal, Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, and Ghana in vaccine manufacturing.

Akufo-Addo also highlighted the urgent need for improved infrastructure, particularly in healthcare, as exposed by the pandemic.

His message reinforced the importance of self-reliance and regional cooperation in shaping Africa’s future.
