According to an aide to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, the ruling party’s candidate, Bola Tinubu, urged supporters to remain calm after preliminary results showed that he had lost Lagos, the country’s largest state, to Peter Obi.

Bashir Ahmad, quoting Mr. Tinubu, said on Twitter: “The fact that the APC lost Lagos State to another party should not be used to justify violence. As a Democrat, you have some successes and some setbacks.”

Tinubu has long been regarded as a powerful figure in Lagos, having served as its governor.
