Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has shared a heartfelt reflection on her journey with identity, revealing that while growing up in London, she once struggled with embracing her African roots.

Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, the award-winning artist said the global rise of Afrobeats has completely changed that narrative, filling her with pride for her heritage and the continent’s creative power.

“I remember growing up in London and not being happy about being African,” she said. “But now, I’m so proud because of how far Afrobeats has come.”

Tiwa dismissed talk that Afrobeats is losing momentum, insisting the genre is thriving. “Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world,” she noted. “We built it from nothing — no structure, no major support, and not even full belief from our own people at the start. Yet here we are, still breaking boundaries.”

She added that what began as a sound born from passion and resilience is now filling stadiums and dominating global charts. “People once said Afrobeats would have its fifteen minutes of fame, but we’re still here — stronger than ever.”

Ending on a powerful note, Tiwa emphasized the unstoppable spirit of African music and culture: “As much as they try to silence us, the music isn’t going anywhere. We are Africans — and we are unstoppable.”
