South African authorities have confirmed the unfortunate passing of a prominent investigator involved in the high-profile prison escape case of Thabo Bester, a convicted rapist, and murderer.
Law enforcement officials have launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the apparent suicide of Brigadier Jackson Mkhaulesi, aged 59, who was discovered deceased inside his vehicle on Monday.
Earlier that day, Mkhaulesi had attended a court proceeding in which the girlfriend of Bester, the renowned “Facebook rapist,” Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, had her request to deem her arrest in Tanzania as unlawful rejected.
The news of Brigadier Mkhaulesi’s demise has had a profound impact across South Africa.
Mkhaulesi, a dedicated and steadfast officer, had served as a police detective for an impressive 31 years.
Bester gained infamy for his use of social networking platforms to entice his victims, earning him the moniker “Facebook rapist.”
In a remarkable turn of events, Bester feigned his own death to facilitate his escape from prison last year. However, he and his girlfriend, who stands accused of aiding his evasion, were apprehended in Tanzania in April and subsequently extradited to South Africa to face legal consequences.
