A Russian woman trapped in an Orthodox Greek church with about 15 other people in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, says their situation is desperate because they have no electricity, water, or food.
She told the BBC that she was attending an Easter service with her seven-year-old daughter on Saturday when fighting erupted between rival military factions.
On Saturday, two Greeks attempting to leave the church were wounded in crossfire in the courtyard.
“They were transported to a nearby hospital.” However, because the hospitals are closing, they are being brought back. There are no medications. “However, they require an operation,” she explained via WhatsApp.
Other than her daughter, two other children have been trapped in the church for the last five days, and they can hear heavy artillery fire.
According to Greek media reports, Ethiopians and Sudanese are also unable to leave the church.
The church had enough food for a couple of days.
“But it’s gone now, as is the fuel for the generator – urban electricity has been cut off since the beginning of the fighting,” her message said.
“You can send this everywhere as a message from our church to the entire world: no electricity, water, or food.”
