Turkey has blocked access to Instagram, according to the national communications authority, BTK. The announcement, posted on BTK’s website, stated that access to “instagram.com” was restricted on August 2, 2024, without providing further details.

Many users in Turkey reported issues refreshing their Instagram feeds, an issue confirmed by AFP journalists. This development follows accusations by Turkey’s presidential communications director, Fahrettin Altun, against Instagram. Altun claimed the platform was preventing people from posting condolence messages for Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, who was killed in Tehran on Wednesday in an attack attributed to Israel. Altun described Instagram’s actions as a clear attempt at censorship.
