On December 1st, the pre-save link for Tyla’s upcoming self-titled debut album went live, generating anticipation among her fans. Alongside the announcement, she treated listeners to a preview of the album by releasing three tracks from the 14-song LP: “Truth or Dare,” “Butterflies,” and “On and On.”
In an interview with Variety, the talented songstress delved into the details of her project and reflected on the success of her breakout track “Water,” which earned her a Grammy nomination. Expressing her genuine surprise at the nomination, she shared, “Honestly, I didn’t think I was going to get nominated. But my label encouraged me to watch the livestream announcement, and I was so nervous… Then I saw my name pop up, and I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t stop screaming. I called my family and my best friend who travels with me. She came to my room, and we just screamed and screamed.”
Discussing the distinctive sound of “Water,” Tyla explained, “What I like is blending amapiano beats with pop and R&B, and ‘Water’ captures exactly that essence.” She emphasized her love for experimenting while staying true to her signature style, a fusion of music and production styles she grew up enjoying. Looking forward to the album release, she expressed her excitement to introduce herself through this new musical chapter.
Recently, “Water” received remixes from Travis Scott and Marshmello in November, adding new dimensions to the already acclaimed track. The single achieved an impressive milestone by reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip Hop Airplay chart this week, surpassing Victoria Monet’s “On My Mama.” The accomplishment further solidifies Tyla’s rising prominence in the music industry.
Earning her inaugural Grammy nomination, Tyla joins the ranks of other first-time nominees such as Ice Spice, Coco Jones, Coi Leray, and Ayra Starr.
In a recent chat with Variety, the South African artist opened up about the creative journey behind TYLA. She shared, “Every weekend, I found myself in the studio, experimenting with various genres. I explored everything from rap to pure pop, R&B, dance music – you name it.”
