UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed hope for Syria’s future on Sunday, following the reported fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. In a statement, Guterres called this a historic opportunity for Syria to rebuild after 14 years of devastating war.

“The people of Syria now have the chance to create a stable, peaceful future after the end of a long-standing regime,” Guterres said, while urging calm and restraint during this pivotal moment. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights of all Syrians, without discrimination.

Assad’s exit comes just days after the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a swift offensive that shattered years of stagnant frontlines. HTS declared their entry into Damascus early Sunday, announcing that Assad had fled the capital. The news sparked celebrations across Syria, as many took to the streets, even looting Assad’s opulent residence.

This shift in power has left the country facing a significant new chapter, with both challenges and opportunities ahead.
