The United Nations has strongly condemned a recent mass flogging in Afghanistan, urging the Taliban authorities to halt such practices immediately.

According to the United Nations mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), about 63 individuals were publicly lashed in the northern province of Saripul on Tuesday. In a statement posted on social media platform X, UNAMA reiterated its opposition to corporal punishment and called for adherence to international human rights standards.

Since the Taliban regained control in August 2021, they have enforced a strict interpretation of Islamic law, or sharia. This has included public executions and corporal punishments, often carried out in front of crowds. Flogging has been primarily used for offenses such as theft, adultery, and alcohol consumption.
