Two relatives of an Egyptian MP who has declared his candidacy for the presidential election next year are said to have been detained.

According to an Egyptian activist, two uncles of Ahmed Tantawi were arrested on Tuesday evening and appeared before prosecutors in Cairo, though no charges have been made public.

Mr. Tantawi has stated that he will return to Egypt on Saturday to fulfill his promise to run in the election.

The reported arrests come as the government launches a national dialogue ostensibly aimed at including the opposition, which has been rendered largely powerless since President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi’s inauguration.
