On Tuesday, U.S. lawmakers voted to expand pre-trial detention for foreign criminal suspects as the new Republican-controlled Congress pushes forward with measures addressing immigration concerns.
The Laken Riley Act, named after a 22-year-old student tragically killed by an undocumented Venezuelan man, focuses on detaining undocumented individuals charged with theft-related crimes. The case gained attention due to the suspect’s previous shoplifting charges and lack of legal status.
Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the importance of border security during a press conference, stating, “This is just the beginning. Border security is a top priority for the American people, and the Laken Riley Act plays a critical role in addressing these challenges.”
The bill, which had passed in the House last year but stalled in the then-Democratic Senate, is now up for renewed consideration. With Republicans gaining control of the upper chamber, a Senate vote is expected soon, though it faces potential hurdles. Some Democrats, like Senator John Fetterman, have co-sponsored the bill, but others remain opposed, citing concerns over expanded detentions without increased funding.
House Minority Whip Katherine Clark criticized the legislation, accusing Republicans of using a tragic incident to advance their political agenda. Despite the division, the House passed the bill with bipartisan support, including 48 Democratic votes, resulting in a 264 to 159 approval.
President-elect Donald Trump has pledged a hardline approach to immigration, promising stricter border enforcement and mass deportations once in office. Trump’s nominee for “border czar,” Tom Homan, is set to spearhead these efforts.
During his campaign, Trump frequently highlighted Laken Riley’s case, using it to advocate for tougher immigration policies. Jose Antonio Ibarra, the man convicted of her murder, was found guilty after her body was discovered near the University of Georgia.
Republican House Whip Tom Emmer expressed strong support for the legislation, calling it “a step toward protecting American communities.” He added, “This isn’t just a law; it’s a statement about restoring American values and putting the safety of our citizens first.”
The Laken Riley Act marks the beginning of a broader Republican effort to enforce stricter immigration laws and address concerns about border security in the months ahead.
