US Sanctions Six Individuals for Alleged Contribution to DR Congo Conflict
The US Treasury has imposed sanctions on six individuals from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), accusing them of playing a role in the ongoing conflict in the eastern region of DR Congo.
According to a statement from the US Department of State, each of these individuals is allegedly contributing to instability in the eastern DR Congo and engaging in human rights abuses, including acts of sexual violence and violence against children.
Among the sanctioned individuals are a commander from the DR Congo’s military, a brigadier in Rwanda’s armed forces, and members of the M23 group and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).
These sanctions will result in the freezing of the assets belonging to these individuals within the United States. Additionally, the sanctions prohibit them from conducting business with American entities and from receiving support, including funds, goods, or services.
