The Electoral Commission of Ghana is reinforcing its push for the adoption of the Ghana Card as the primary document for voter registration.
According to the EC, utilizing the Ghana Card exclusively could have prevented the disturbances witnessed at some registration centers.
During a press briefing in Accra, Dr. Bossman Asare, a Deputy Chair of the Electoral Commission, stressed the importance of a smoother and more peaceful registration process.
Dr. Asare encouraged political party representatives to utilize the challenge process to address any concerns about applicants’ eligibility, rather than resorting to physical altercations.
“We’ve observed that disturbances at some registration centers arise from doubts about the ages of applicants,” Dr. Asare remarked.
“This underscores the Commission’s advocacy for the Ghana Card, which includes the bearer’s date of birth and nationality, and the elimination of the guarantor system.”
“We anticipate that in the upcoming registration exercise, applicants will use the Ghana Card as their primary identification,” he added.
The EC’s promotion of the Ghana Card as the sole identification document aims to streamline the registration process and reduce conflicts.
Dr. Asare emphasized that many incidents of violence were linked to challenges regarding applicants’ ages and citizenship.
