Thousands of people are expected to greet Pope Francis when he arrives at Kinshasa’s airport shortly.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has the largest Catholic community in Africa, and this will be the country’s first papal visit in nearly four decades.

When he travels to South Sudan later this week, he will be joined by the Church of England’s most senior cleric, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Moderator of the Church of Scotland.

He is expected to call on political leaders to end years of hostilities. Congo and South Sudan have both experienced decades of war and instability.
