Following the signing of a peace agreement earlier this month, the World Food Programme (WFP) reports that the first food aid trucks to enter Ethiopia’s northern Tigray province are now approaching the area.
WFP posted a video of the relief trucks driving along with the message, “Critical food assistance will now be provided to communities in coming days. More food, nutrition, and medical cargo will follow.”
In an unexpected move, the warring parties—the Ethiopian government and the Tigrayan fighters—agreed on November 2 to put an end to their two-year struggle, which had resulted in thousands of fatalities and famine warnings.
The 5.5 million people who make up Tigray require food assistance, with many of them malnourished.
