The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) has made a formal request to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for transparency regarding the ongoing irregular power supply affecting the nation.

In an official statement released through its Communications Director, Joseph Obeng, the Association has urged ECG to provide detailed information about the causes of the intermittent power disruptions, commonly referred to as “dumsor,” and their plans to address them.

GUTA stressed the importance of receiving specific timelines for resolving these issues, along with a comprehensive load-shedding schedule to assist its members in planning effectively.

The impact of these power cuts is severe across various sectors, including agriculture, commerce, and manufacturing. Manufacturers are particularly affected, facing challenges such as disrupted production schedules, difficulties in workforce planning, and increased operational costs, which ultimately affect living standards.

Moreover, traders, shopkeepers, wholesalers, tailors, dressmakers, electricians, and other artisans are also feeling the adverse effects of the recurring power outages.

GUTA is urging ECG to provide clarity on the root causes of the power disruptions, the measures being taken to address them, and a timeline for resolution. Additionally, they are calling for a clear load-shedding timetable to help businesses strategize and minimize the impact on their operations.

These power outages significantly disrupt normal business operations, especially for industries reliant on electricity. Manufacturing plants, IT firms, and service providers face challenges such as disrupted production schedules, delayed deliveries, and loss of revenue.
