Laolu Akande, a former aide to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has shared crucial diplomatic advice for President Bola Tinubu regarding Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. During an interview with Channels TV, Akande emphasized the importance of appointing ambassadors to key locations such as New York, Washington, and London, as well as to several strategic African countries.

This call for action follows Vice President Kashim Shettima’s remarks at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, where he advocated for Nigeria’s permanent membership on the Security Council. Shettima even sought support from Finnish President Alexander Stubb during the assembly.

Akande noted, “If we truly want this seat, we must have ambassadors in New York, Washington, and London. It’s essential to establish a presence in these key locations.” He also suggested that even if full representation isn’t feasible, appointing ambassadors to about ten strategic places could strengthen Nigeria’s position.

He warned that failing to secure a seat amid strong competition would be challenging, stating, “There are significant obstacles, and we have considerable work ahead of us.” Akande’s insights underscore the urgency for Nigeria to bolster its diplomatic efforts in pursuit of this significant international role.
