Yango, a taxi-hailing app in Cameroon, has been suspended until further notice.
The transport ministry stated that it had not obtained a license and chastised it for using private vehicles to transport public and commercial goods.
The decision follows numerous complaints from transportation unions who are upset that Yango drivers do not pay taxes.
However, app users are dissatisfied with the suspension because rising fuel prices have increased the cost of public transportation.
According to one consumer group, the app was reasonably priced and guaranteed user safety.
Yango is Cameroon’s sole ride-hailing app, and it has been available in the capital, Yaoundé, and the city of Douala since November 2021. It is used by thousands of people every day.
